The A6 route, connecting Londonderry to the port of Larne, forms part of the Trans European Network and has been identified as one of the five Key Transport Corridors in Northern Ireland. These corridors connect the major towns and cities of the Region to regional gateways and the Belfast Metropolitan Area.
The A6 Corridor plays a vital role in the economy north and south of the Border between the two Member States: United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Improvements to this route will have a positive economic impact on and will provide the means for all citizens to access social and educational services as well as leisure activities.
The aim of the current project is to double the lanes on a 30km stretch of the A6 between Londonderry and Dungiven, the remaining 14km of the section Londonderry-Randalstown forming part of a separate project.
As a preferred corridor has already been selected, the study will concentrate on the realisation of the preliminary design and draft orders.
It is estimated that the new road will reduce journey time, improve road safety, enhance foreign direct investments in the North West of the Region as well as for County Donegal in Ireland, develop cross-border business, trade and tourism, improve employment opportunities, and also provide outlets for indigenous business.
