Study and implementation of AIS monitoring network

This project is part of a global project of implementing Directive 2005/44/EC on harmonised River Information Services (RIS) in the Netherlands and Germany. It is supported by several TEN-T grants.

The aim of this particular project is to install an inland AIS (Automatic Identification System) monitoring network covering all the waterways of the Netherlands. This includes interfacing with other existing maritime AIS monitoring networks and integrating with Vessel Tracking Services (VTS) and lock-based radar systems.

It aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of navigation on the waterways in the context of increased traffic and vessel size.

State of progress on 31 December 2010:

As part of the preparatory phase, a large number of locations for installing base stations have been approved. An agreement between all the relevant organisations (at national, regional, local levels) on information exchange has been signed.
