The Port of Malmö plays an important role in the regional, national and international transport system, and combined transport from Malmö has achieved a very large growth during the last 8-10 years. While transport demand increases, the present terminal facilities are lacking space and there are no expansion possibilities. It is thus necessary to establish terminal facilities with a larger capacity for multimodal/intermodal transport. A global project for the development of the Northern Harbour has been prepared to overcome infrastructure bottlenecks and to increase capacity for combined and multimodal transport in the Port of Malmö.
The global project includes the establishment of a combined multimodal terminal which will consist of a ro-ro ferry terminal with terminal area, a container terminal and a combined (railway) terminal. The terminals will be established in connection to a new dry bulk/multi purpose terminal with railway connection to the national railway system. Adjacent to the combined terminals a large new logistic centre of some 650,000 m2 will also be constructed.
This action will support the following items of the global project:
- Construction of the new ro-ro terminal with three ferry berths
- Dredging of the waters
- Construction of roads to connect the new logistics centre to the combined terminals and to the overall infrastructure
- Installation of an autogate system with two portals/lanes and equipment
Another part of the global project, the combi-terminal (railway) has also received TEN-T support from the annual programme (2007-SE-92404-P).
State of progress on 31 December 2012:
The Action is progressing as planned. The new ro-ro terminal with three ferry berths is operational. The dredging is also completed and the autogate is installed. The Action has been modified and the roads in the logistic centre will not be part of the Action. An extension on the end date of the Action by 7 months has been granted to complete part of the connection roads.
