European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), composed of a unique European Train Control System (ETCS) and radio system GSM-R, is designed to gradually replace the existing incompatible national systems throughout Europe.
Sweden's Botniabanan is an important link ensuring reliable freight transport between the peripheral regions of the northern part of Scandinavia and the central part of Europe.
The study is a crucial element of the planning and detailed technical design of the whole Botniabanan line project which encompasses four main subject areas: track and line, power supply, signalling system and telecommunications and safety assessment issues. The completed studies were followed by two projects aiming at further preparation of Botniabanan for ERTMS deployment, i.e. 2005-SE-91401-S "ERTMS Test section for Botniabanan" and 2006-SE-91401-S "Detailed technical planning for ERTMS on Botniabanan".
Ultimate installation of the ERTMS will significantly improve the capacity of the line. Moreover, the development of the line will greatly improve the flexibility and access to passenger services for the cities along the Sweden's east coast.
This project has been completed.
