Faro Airport (AFR) is one of the main Portuguese transport infrastructures (part of Priority Project 8 - Multimodal axis Portugal/Spain-rest of Europe), acting almost exclusively as a gateway for tourists who predominantly visit the Algarve region and the Spanish region of Huelva.
In the recent past, there have been profound changes in traffic typology, as a direct result of developments in the provision of air transport that have led to a massive growth in the availability and frequency of short and medium haul flights, particularly through low cost carriers. There has, thus, been an increase in demands in terms of safety/security and environmental requirements.
The strategic response to these issues faced by Faro Airport was found through the conceptualisation of a series of interventions on the airport infrastructure, which were subsequently brought together under a single development plan.
The implementation of this plan will allow Faro Airport to not only continue to provide a strong and sustained response to growing and changing demand, but also to deliver an efficient and effective response to recent new requirements governing airport operations.
State of progress on 31 December 2010:
The Action is progressing. All the activities have started, but they have been affected by unusually bad weather conditions and other difficulties encountered in the implementation of the project.
