This project aims to bring River Information Services (RIS) to the Westerscheldt river, in compliance with the 2005 RIS Directive (2005/44/EC).
The Westerscheldt river, located on the border between Belgium and The Netherlands, is a very important axis for waterborne transport and used at high capacity by maritime and inland transport.
The project's objective is to adapt the existing local vessel traffic management systems in such a way that they will be able to offer both maritime vessel traffic management and river information services, bringing safer and smoother navigation on the Westerscheldt river.
State of progress on 31 December 2010:
The study on the implementation of River Information Services was completed at the end of 2008. The other activities are ongoing.
