The key objective of the project is to increase the efficiency of the Malta Freeport Terminals' port operations by allowing its two terminals to accommodate larger container vessels offering faster turnaround times.
This development will enable the port to handle longer and larger vessels - up to a maximum 363 m long and of 11,400 containers TEUs (Twenty foot Equivalent Unit) capacity - by increasing the water depth, quay length and number of ground slots at the port.
By doing so, it aims to improve the environmental performance of the Maltese transport system. Waiting times for ships outside the port will be reduced, security measures will be improved in the harbour, and port users will benefit from increased worldwide network connections.
There will also be greater scope in promoting the environmentally favourable Motorways of the Sea concept and strengthening the inter-regional co-operation with the other EU Member States already using the port's facilities.
