This project concerns the Lithuanian part of the "Rail Baltica" corridor, linking Warsaw-Kaunas-Riga-Tallinn-Helsinki (Priority Project 27).
The project aims at preparing the studies required for the upgrading of existing Lithuanian railway on the following sections:
- Polish cross-border-Sestokai-Marijampole
- Marijampole-Kazlu Ruda
- Kazlu Ruda-Kaunas
- Kaunas-Jonava
- Jonava-Radviliskis-Siauliai
- Siauliai-Joniskis-Latvian cross-border
In concrete terms, the study covers the drafting of technical documentation for land acquisition and public works. It also contributes to the global "Rail Baltica" study on European gauge.
Its results are crucial for the realisation of "Rail Baltica" and a fully interoperable European railway to the three Baltic states.
State of progress on 31 December 2010:
The feasibility study for the section Marijampole-Kazlu Ruda-Kaunas was completed. The Environment Impact Assessment for the section Siauliai-Joniskis-LT/LV state border has started. The feasibility study for a European separate gauge line is has started and is in progress.
