This project is part of the "Rail Baltica" linking Warsaw-Kaunas-Riga-Tallinn-Helsinki (Priority Project 27). The main objective of the Action is to provide projected passenger train speed up to 120 km/h and freight train speed up to 80 km/h along the Latvian sections of "Rail Baltica" existing line. The project covers the works required to reconstruct 152 km of railway line on the "Rail Baltica" route.
Precisely, it aims to upgrade and reconstruct the following cross-border sections:
- Northern segment: from Sigulda to Valka on the Latvian-Estonian border
- Southern segment: Latvian-Lithuanian border to Jelgava
State of progress on 31 December 2011:
On 2 May 2011, the project resumed implementation. The procurement procedure for the supply of the railway materials (rails, ballast and sleepers) is in progress.
