The objective of this project is to remove the bottleneck of the Cattolica tunnel and allow the transit of freight trains loaded with high-cube containers along the Adriatic Corridor railway axis.
The works, located on the Cattolica-Pesaro section of the Bologna-Lecce line, consist of the construction of a new single track and electrified section, parallel to the existing Cattolica tunnel. The new section will be 2.2 km long, of which 1.2 km underground. One track of the existing double-track tunnel, would be removed, with the remaining track to be repositioned in the centre of the tunnel for north-south traffic flows only. The project also includes the necessary equipping of an Automatic Block System between Cattolica and Pesaro.
The work phases, except for the final connections of the new railway section, will not interrupt the day-to-day railway operation.
State of progress on 31 December 2011:
The excavation of the tunnel is complete and the civil works have progressed during 2011.
