This project aims at finalising the construction of the last remaining gap of the high-speed railway axis Paris-Brussels-Köln-Amsterdam-London (Priority Project 2), in the rail section between Düren and the German-Belgian border.
More specifically, it encompasses the following objectives:
- For the section between Düren and Aachen railway station: general track upgrading works to increase the capacity of the line.
- For the section between Aachen station and the German-Belgian border, including the Buschtunnel: the tunnel will be renovated and upgraded in order to make it suitable for high-speed rail standards. The electro-technical installations will be adjusted, as well as the electrification and technical safety standards, the tracks will be widened.
State of progress on 31 December 2011:
For the Düren-Aachen section, the planning of the necessary works is ongoing. For the section between Aachen station and the German-Belgian border, the upgrading works for the Buschtunnel are almost completed.
