New high-speed line between Karlsruhe and Basel, partly with reconstruction of the existing line

Part of Priority Project 24

This rail project, part of the Priority Project 24 Railway axis Lyon/Genova-Basel-Duisburg-Rotterdam/Antwerpen, will create additional capacities on the railway axis between Karlsruhe and Basel which are necessary to serve the new alpine crossing.

182 km of tracks will either be upgraded to a maximum speed of 200 km/h or newly built with a maximum speed of 250 km/h. This includes four tunnels with a total length of 17 km.

The project aims to improve rail efficiency. Four tracks will be made available to separate freight and long distance traffic. In addition, the travel time between Karlsruhe and Basel will be reduced from 100 to 69 minutes.
