Railway Seinäjoki-Oulu (2007-2009)

This project involves with the main railway connection between southern and northern Finland, which is used heavily by both passenger and freight traffic. It provides access to the multimodal corridor Narvik-Haparanda-Tornio-Vartius-St. Petersburg and the Barents Euro-Arctic transport area.

Presently this single-track railway is facing capacity and structural problems. There are also over 100 hundred level crossings on the line which create a safety issue and affect the maximum speed limit of the track.

The project consists of a variety of structural, electrical, safety and capacity measures and improvements on the line. The overall objective is to improve the competitiveness of the railway traffic by cutting down the journey times, by increasing the axle load for freight traffic and by providing sufficient capacity and high level services.
