Studies for the capacity improvements of the section between Copenhagen and Ringsted

Part of Priority Project 20

The mainline rail between Copenhagen and Ringsted is a central part of the Danish rail network. Presently running at full capacity, the line is used for traffic between the provinces, local and regional passenger transport, as well as domestic and international freight. The capacity problems create a bottleneck that will worsen due to increasing commuting demand and a potential increase in goods traffic transit through Denmark once the Fehmarn fixed link is established (Priority Project 20).

These studies are part of the global project aiming to improve the capacity on the intersection Øresund-German border to comply with the increasing railway traffic and optimise passenger and freight rail connections between Scandinavia and central Europe.

The project consists of the studies of two future alternatives:

  • a new line from Copenhagen to Ringsted, including a new station in Køge
  • an expansion of the existing main line with a 5th track between Hvidovre and Høje Tåstrup
