Currently, long distance express and conventional air freight arriving in European airports must be redistributed throughout Europe according to each customer's distribution networks. Short distance air transport and road transport are the only possibilities for distribution, at a European scale, in line with both the freight volumes handled and the specific requirements of freight. The CAREX project represents a concrete high speed railway alternative, capable of fulfilling the strictest requirements of air freight, while considerably reducing the impact of the pre- and post-air transport concerned.
The Euro CAREX network, including Lyon, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Liège, aims at improving intermodal transport and in particular to shift freight from air and road to rail mode.
Within the coordinated scope of Euro CAREX, Liège CAREX aims to carry out the construction of a trimodal railport (air, rail, road). This will constitute a link in the future European express rail freight network, travelling on the high speed lines and offering a viable alternative to the short-distance intra-European flights and to express road freight.
The proposed Action is composed of 3 activities, covering all the studies that will lead to the completion of the Liège railport. These studies will cover all the technical and financial aspects, which will create the basis for the future construction works of the Liège Railport. Through this Action, Liège takes a lead role in the Euro CAREX Network, by being the first site to propose the finalisation of the studies and the concrete implementation of the terminal.
