The project is part of a Global Project: the Albert Canal upgrading. The objective of this Global Project is to increase the capacity of the Albert Canal by widening it at its very narrow bridge passages and by replacing the existing bridges by bridges with a higher clearance.
The Noorderlaanbridge is one of the bridges to be replaced. The present project concerns the construction of a new bridge dedicated to public transport (tram and buses) taking into account the improvements of the canal.
The project will contribute to a modal shift from road to waterway transport (after completion, it will be possible to have four barge convoys instead of two and vessels with four layers of containers instead of three). In addition, the public transport bridge will include a new tram line, connecting the city centre of Antwerp to the village of Ekeren. Finally, the separation of road transport from public transport will contribute to smoother and safer road traffic.
This project has been completed.
