Four-track development of the Western Line, construction project Ybbs-Amstetten, Burgstaller Tunnel (skeleton construction)

Part of Priority Project 17

The four-track development of the Western Line between Vienna and Linz is part of the section Vienna-Salzburg on Priority Project 17, railway axis Paris-Strasbourg-Stuttgart-Wien-Bratislava.

This project is situated in the subsection Ybbs-Amstetten between Vienna and Linz. In particular, it foresees the construction of the Burgstaller tunnel from km 115.150 to km 115.720, situated between Hubertendorf and Blindenmarkt.

This tunnel construction is an essential part of the four-track Western Line development and mainly serves to:

  • close the gap of the priority axes
  • eliminate bottlenecks and increase the capacity in cross-border passenger and goods transport
  • boost the attractiveness of the cross-border transport between Germany and the new Member States
  • develop more environmentally friendly international transport routes for passenger and goods transport

The construction of the superstructure and the technical equipment will be subsequently made in the course of the overall realisation, requiring the following construction works:

  • 378 m long "mining" tunnel
  • 122 m long tunnel adjacent to the west in open construction
  • adjacent 70 m sump

This project has been completed.
